Fake Tax Bill Email

The Internal Revenue Service has issued another warning to taxpayers and tax professionals to be on the alert for fake emails claiming to contain IRS tax bills related to the Affordable Care Act. In the email scammers are attaching fraudulent versions of the CP2000 tax notice for the year 2015 requesting payments be made by mail or a link provided in the email body. The Internal Revenue Service warns that the real CP2000 tax notice is never sent as part of an email as most correspondence with the IRS starts through the mail. If you or someone you know receives this email the Internal Revenue Service is asking you to forward it to phishing@irs.gov.

2016 has been a busy year for scammers trying to get access to your personal information and money. As your tax professional we do everything we can to help keep your information safe and keep you informed of scams such as this. As always if you ever have any questions we are always available to answer your questions.

The IRS also wants taxpayers to be aware that they are actively working on ways to keep your private information protected. As of right now the best tool they have to fight scams such as this is spreading awareness among the public. To help make this a reality the IRS has started a “Taxes. Security. Together” awareness campaign to help keep taxpayers protected. You can read more on the campaign here.
